Field Trip To Explore Park

Last week, we took our first field trip to Explore Park in Roanoke. We had a very busy day going back in time and learning how people lived long ago. The weather was nearly perfect for our field trip! Here are some pictures to see what we did!

We went back in time to the 16th century and visited Totero Village-- an Indian Village. The Indian told us about how they built their homes and how they lived in the village. We then got to take a look in some of the houses and around the village.

The girls were cooking a meal in the fire while the men were out hunting!

Welcome to Frontier Fort! The Frontierman welcomed us by
playing "Yankee Doodle" on his flute.

The Frontierman shot an imaginary turkey for us to have something to eat!

Here's where the frontiermen slept in their fort.

It was time for school. The boys were gentlemen and let the ladies enter the one room schoolhouse first! We didn't have desks, but sat on log benches like the children did long ago. They had a morning message that looked just like our morning message! The teacher told us about how the children went to school in the past.

The school teacher did NOT put up with us not listening. What happened to the students long ago when they didn't listen?

Next stop was the Doctor's Office. We are very lucky to have the doctor offices that we have today! Here the doctor was going to take out Caitlyn's tonsils with just a little hook!

Next, we went onto the Battaeu Site. We learned how they transported things long ago. They didn't have cars, so used the rivers and the boats on the river. We learned a new word-- Battaeu means a big boat or canoe!
They would call the people down river to tell them they were on the way using this horn!
They also had wooden carts that the horses would pull supplies in. We learned how a pulley would help them lift very heavy barrels.

We tried to see if the pulley made it easier to lift the barrel!

What a good lookin' class! The last stop of the day was the Grist Mill. We learned how the water provided the means for them to make cornmeal long ago. We made cornmeal and felt it coming out of the machine. Then we went outside and saw the wheel turning the water and providing the "electricity" to make the cornmeal.

We had a great day at Explore Park. Thank you to all of the adults who went along with us. We couldn't have had as much fun without you! Thanks again!
